“Down In The Jungle”, an arrangement by Carol King for recorders, voice, pitched and unpitched percussion instruments, presents students with opportunities for developing fine motor skills, ear-training, and note-reading, as well as exploring wind instrument performance and ensemble playing. The piece is composed in three sections, with two of the sections being repeated, creating a Rondo form (ABACA). Within the sections are elements of music, such as rhythm, steady beat, melody and melodic direction, and ostinato (repeated patterns of rhythm and melody), which students learn to use as tools for understanding how music is constructed. For this presentation of “Down In The Jungle”, students in Mrs. Guild's fourth grade class at Abbot School learned the three separate sections of music, then arranged them into rondo form, creating an interesting and satisfying musical experience.
